Decoding Queries about "THE LABOUR "



 

Pregnancy brings joy to every family, but as excited as you are to add a new member to your family, it can also be a stressful time dealing with pregnancy woes. Below are answers to some common questions.

Q 1. This is my first pregnancy and I am 8 months into my pregnancy. How will I know that my D -day has come?


As the pregnancy nears completion, you can expect to go into labour anytime. Labour starts with pains called Labour Pains. There are two types of Labour Pains, false and true labour pains. False labour pains are not associated with any delivery. They last a while and subside on their own. True labour pains on the other hand result in the start of the delivery or the birthing process.


False labour pains can add to the anxiety as the mother may not be sure if they are just false or true. So, if you’re worried about whether the pain you are or will be feeling is a false labour pain or a true labour pain read the following signs:


  • Doctors can also detect false or true labour pains by examination.

  • However after 36-37 weeks, if the patient starts labour pains need not to worry because the baby is completely viable and mature.

Q 2 . When to report to the hospital ?

If you are still worried about whether to report to the hospital or not, see these signs to know when it is the right time to report to the hospital:

  • Whenever there are true labour pains as described above you should report to the hospital first.

  • If your baby is not moving for the last 6-7 hours, you should report to the hospital.

  • If you have any amount of bleeding during any time of the pregnancy, this is an emergency to see a doctor.

  • Frank watery discharge per vaginum, your water bag has burst and it may be sign of labor High grade fever is again an emergency

  • Pain abdomen, diarrhea, vomiting, cough, cold, difficulty in breathing, immediately see your doctor.

  • In case you are known hypertensive in pregnancy and you develop swelling in your feet, headache, giddiness and pain in the pit of your stomach,these are all not good signs and they warrant you to rush to the hospital

  • Any accident, which might have hit your abdomen, go to emergency to ensure everything is fine inside.


C. What should I carry to the hospital when I get admitted for Delivery?


You should keep a bag ready to carry to the hospital at least 3-4 weeks before the expected date of delivery. You may have to rush to the hospital unexpectedly before your due date and you will not want to waste time scrambling for things at the last moment. Below is a list of the items that you should keep ready in the bag.


FOR NEWBORN:

  • Seasonal soft clothes for the baby should not be brand new. if so wash them once.

  • In winter, woolen caps, mittens, and socks are a must along with baby blankets.

  • Baby clothes that open in front are preferred.

  • Soft cotton clothes should also be kept for cleaning and sponging purpose. Wipes can also be used.

  • A few small towels and baby sheets should also be kept for cleaning and sponging purpose.

  • You can take baby oil and soap of your choice.

  • Both cloth (cotton) and disposable diapers can be used.


FOR MOTHER:

  • Seasonal clothes and the maternity dress - which can be a gown or any other with a maternity/nursing bra and disposable panties can also be used if you want so.

  • Remove your jewelry at home.

  • Remove your nail paint and cut your nails short.

  • Tie your hair neatly and don't use hair pins or hair clips.

  • Bring your phone and charger with you.

  • Boothbrush, paste, comb (if not provided by the hospital.
