Some of the available treatments prevent you from making righteous decisions. That’s why in this blog, we will explore the top 5 methods for kidney stone removal, highlighting the advanced medical techniques available to patients seeking treatment for kidney-related stones.

So, let’s begin.

What are Kidney Stones?

Kidney stones are formed from accumulating minerals and salts inside your kidneys. Kidney stones can affect any part of your urinary tract.

Kidney stone removal surgeries are quite painful & stressful procedures, but these treatments are effective in most cases. For the treatment to be purely successful, early diagnosis & treatment is the best way.

What are the Common Causes of Kidney Stones?

Some of the significant risk factors for kidney stones in India are:-

  • Dehydration (not drinking enough water, milk, or juices)

  • Having a diet including meat, beans, and pulses that are protein-rich & high in fibre content.

  • Eating too much sugary content.

  • Someone in your family suffers from kidney stones. (Genetic)

  • Having a blockage or obstruction in your urinary tract.

5 Effective Methods for Kidney Stone Removal in India

1. Ureteroscopy Kidney Stone Removal (URS):-

Ureteroscopy is another common method for kidney stone removal in India. It is a scarless surgery in which stones found in the ureter or kidney are removed using a thin, flexible telescope without making cuts. This procedure is typically performed under anaesthesia.

The surgeon can visualize the stone's size and then decide to extract it wholly or use the laser to break it into tiny fragments. Ureteroscopy has a high success rate with minimal discomfort and a shorter recovery time.

Ureteroscopy is not recommended for people who have large-sized kidney stones.

2. Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL):-

This method for kidney stone removal is recommended for large-sized kidney stones (more than 2 cm in diameter). In this procedure, a passage is created by making a small incision (1 cm approx.) in the patient's back to reach the kidney. A nephroscope is then passed through to find and remove the stones.

At our centre, PCNL is performed by the most experienced & skilled urologists. Owning its advanced nature, the procedure has less post-operative pain, a shorter hospital stay, and a quick recovery compared to open stone surgery.

Patients with severe heart or lung complications or bleeding propensity are not recommended for PCNL surgery. Also, people with active urinary infections should be looked at before surgery.

3. Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery for Kidney Stones(RIRS):-

RIRS procedure is another advanced method for removing kidney stones in India. Under this procedure, a fibre-optic endoscope is inserted through the natural urinary passage without needing external incisions. Using the tube, a surgeon can visualise the kidney stone and use a Holmium laser beam to break up the stone into smaller chunks.

RIRS is effective against stones of various sizes located in different parts of the kidney, and its precise nature leads to less post-operative care & quick recovery.

4. Kidney Stent Surgery

This method of kidney stone removal in India is suitable for kidney stones that can pass through the ureters. Kidney stent surgery is used when the stent can’t be placed inside the ureters. So to perform a nephrostomy, a stent (tube) is inserted straight into a kidney. The stent drains urine from the kidney, bypassing the ureters and bladder.

5. Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL):

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) is a non-invasive surgery for kidney stone removal in India. This procedure involves shock waves to tear down kidney stones into fragments small enough to pass through urine.

ESWL is not for people with chronic kidney infections because some stone fragments may not pass through urine, and it may lead to bacterial infection in the kidneys. The procedure is also not recommended for people with a blockage or scar tissue in the ureter.
