What are Orthopaedic Injuries?

Orthopaedic injuries are injuries or trauma caused by some external force that damages the musculoskeletal system of bones, cartilage, joints, ligaments, muscles, and body tendons. Some common forms of external force include a severe fall, a serious accident, or even a violent attack.

And according to the severity of the injuries, you may have to undergo surgical or non-surgical treatment. In non-surgical treatments, casts & braces are used to develop the lost alignment & shape of the bone, joints, & muscles. Less intensive surgeries, such as arthroscopic surgery, are performed on an outpatient.

What are the Common Causes of Orthopaedic Injuries in India?

The causes of acute orthopaedic injuries exist. Let’s know them too:

  • Slipping and falling.

  • Sudden twisting motions.

  • Sports accidents.

  • Road accidents.

  • In-home accidents.

  • Work accidents.

  • A direct blow to the body.

What are the Types of Orthopaedic Injuries?

We all face some form of musculoskeletal injuries/complications at some point. From road accidents, sports, and falls to simply working, there are many ways in which a person can develop orthopaedic injuries. Here are the 10 most common orthopaedic diseases that people report to orthopaedic experts:

1. Fractures

Fractures are usually breaks or cracks in bones due to falls, sports injuries, and road accidents. Common fractures include those in the wrist, forearm, ankle, hip, and femur (thigh bone).

In case of a broken bone penetrating the skin, it is called an open or compound fracture. These fractures usually take longer to heal. Whereas in the case of a close fracture, the broken or cracked bone doesn’t pierce the skin. That’s why bone fractures are the most acute orthopaedic injuries.

Common Symptoms of Bone Fractures

These include

  • Unbearable pain.

  • Bumps & swelling.

  • Newly developed inability to move

  • The fractured part will get bruised & poorly discoloured.

There are CT scans, MRIs, & X-rays that will help an orthopaedic doctor to diagnose the orthopaedic issue and treat it better. Several kinds of treatments are used to treat bone fractures, from splinters or casts and closed reduction to surgical operations involving rods, plates & screws.

2. Sprain & Strain

Sprains & strains are the two most common orthopaedic issues people face. In orthopaedics, a joint sprain occurs when the ligaments (bands of tissue connecting two bones) get torn or overstretched. This most likely happen in the ankles and wrists.

A joint strain occurs due to the tearing or overstretching of muscles or tendons (fibrous cords of tissue connecting bones to muscles). Ankles, knees, wrists, and shoulders are more prone to these orthopaedic traumas as sports, falls, or lifting heavy objects put enormous strain on the muscles & tissues.

Common Symptoms of Sprain

  • bruising

  • pain around the affected joint

  • swelling

  • minimal to no flexibility

  • difficulty in moving the sprained part

Common Symptoms of Strain

  • muscle spasm

  • swelling

  • restrained flexibility

  • difficulty in moving the sprained part

3. Dislocation

A dislocation happens when the bones in a joint are dislocated or pushed out of their regular place due to external force. In case of complete dislocation (luxation), the bone in your joints is completely moved out of its usual place. Moreover, in the case of subluxation (partial dislocation), some part of the bone is still in shape or balance as normal.

Shoulders, elbows, fingers, and hip joints are prone to dislocation. The dislocation happens due to accidents, falls, or high-impact sports. That’s why dislocation is the most acute orthopaedic injury.

Common Symptoms of Dislocation

  • Pain.

  • Swelling.

  • Bruising or discolouration.

  • The joint looks abnormal, out of shape or balance

  • Inability to move effortlessly

  • Weak joints or frequent pain in the affected joints

4. Ligament Injuries

Injuries to ligaments, such as the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) or medial collateral ligament (MCL), are pretty painful & negatively impact your daily routine. Such orthopaedic injuries mainly occur in the knee, ankle, or other joints due to sudden twisting, direct impact, or sports-related incidents. This makes ligament injuries some of the most acute orthopaedic injuries.

Common Symptoms of Ligament Injuries

  • A sudden eruption of severe pain

  • A popping sound during the injury

  • Swelling within the first 24 hours

  • Lack of stiffness in the joints

  • Inability to put weight on the joint without pain or any weight at all

5. Rotator Cuff Tears

A rotator cuff is a group of muscles & tendons that allow you to lift or move your arms. Tear in the rotator cuff occurs when tendons pull out from the arm bone. A tear in the rotator cuff can result from repetitive overhead activities, falls, or degenerative changes.

Common Symptoms of Rotator Cuff Tear

  • Difficulty and pain caused by raising your arm.

  • Popping or clicking sounds or sensations when moving your arm.

  • Shoulder pain that worsens at night or when resting your arm.

  • Shoulder weakness and struggling to lift items.

6. Spinal Cord Injuries

The spinal cord is a column of nerve tissues that transmits information between the brain & the rest of your body. The cord is damaged or torn wholly or partially in a spinal cord injury. That’s why spinal cord injuries are one of the most sophisticated & acute orthopaedic injuries.

Some severe spinal cord conditions include herniated discs or fractures of the vertebrae. Paralysis is most likely to occur due to these types of injuries. Road accidents fall, sports-related incidents or gunshot wounds are the most common causes of this orthopaedic trauma.

Common Symptoms of Spinal Cord Injuries

  • Weakness in the arms or legs.

  • Loss of sensation in the arms and or legs.

  • Disordered bowel or bladder control

  • Severe spasm or pressure in the neck or back.

  • Abnormal lumps along the spine.

  • Restrained breathing.

7. Osteoarthritis

While osteoarthritis is not an injury in the traditional sense, it is a common orthopaedic condition in India. In this age-related condition, prolonged inflammation or damage causes deterioration of tendons and ligaments and a breakdown of cartilage, resulting in pain, swelling, and joint deformity. Various joints, such as the knees, hips, and hands, are most likely to be affected by osteoarthritis.

Common Symptoms of Osteoarthritis

  • Prolonged joint pain (gradually increasing).

  • Gradual increase in the swelling of joints.

  • A sensation of crunching or grinding.

  • Increased stiffness.

What are the Common Sports Orthopaedic Injuries in India?

We all know that cricket, badminton, hockey, football, & many more are physically intensive activities that put extravagant pressure on various body parts. Because of this, our body becomes susceptible to several orthopaedic trauma. Here are some of the most common ones:

  • Sprains and strains.

  • Knee injuries.

  • Swollen muscles.

  • Achilles tendon injuries.

  • Pain along the shin bone.

  • Rotator cuff injuries.

  • Fractures (broken bones)

  • Dislocations

These orthopaedic injuries could be mild or severe depending on the specificity of a specific orthopaedic sports issue.
